The Shaver Mystery

Some of the travelogue photos for my next post are still on the wrong computer, so I’ll content you with this article on the Shaver mystery (via The Anomalist).  For those who don’t know, Richard Shaver was a Pennsylvania welder who believed he was receiving mental communications from an underground civilization.  Ray Palmer of Amazing Stories virtually let Shaver took over his magazine with fantastic stories of these creatures.

I managed to grab a few issues of Palmer’s The Hidden World zine a while ago, including samples of Shaver/Palmer correspondence.  I was struck by Shaver’s discussion of his love for the pulps – including an extensive knowledge of Weird Tales, Lovecraft’s preferred market – and a passage or two that indicated that he had incorporated elements of Derleth’s Mythos into his belief system.  I should really dig those out some time.
