Scarlet Imprint sent out an email yesterday announcing the formation of its Bibliothèque Rouge imprint. The name evokes the history of the Bibliothèque Bleue, a type of cheap chapbook sold throughout France in past centuries that brought affordable books on many topics – including magic – to the common folk. For the Imprint, this means that those who would like a fine hardbound or limited edition copy of such books will be able to do so, while a line of cheaper paperbacks will also be available.
I see this as a good thing. Limited edition books are wonderful to buy or own, but they won’t often make it into locations such as libraries where scholars will be able to access them in future generations and learn more about grimoires, the study of which is still very much in its infancy.
