On the Shelf Review – Not So Quiet

Not So Quiet is a recent release in Pelgrane Press’ Trail of Cthulhu Line, written by Call of Cthulhu author Adam Gauntlett.  (For full disclosure, this is not a review copy, and I am under contract with Pelgrane for a small project.)

Set in World War I, the scenario opens on a convoy on its way to a field hospital in war-torn France.  After giving the characters a taste of the horrors around them, they will find that their position behind the front lines is by no means secure.  Some of their keepers are cruel, curious experiments are being performed, and a secretive cult works to escape the horrors of war.  Characters will have their work cut out for them.

The scenario comes with pregenerated characters, and that always raises the question as to whether one should play with them for full effect or if one’s own characters can also be run equally effectively.  In this case, it would seem to be the latter – save that the scenario likely is most interesting when you have the characters equally split between injured patients and new staff for the clinic.  Luckily, I doubt there’s many Trail of Cthulhu World War I campaigns going on out there, so this shouldn’t be too inconvenient.

A great deal of this scenario depends upon character interaction with the various medical personnel and injured soldiers in the hospital.  Much of this is based on individual choices and predispositions, as some individuals will approach different characters based on their Credit Rating, their initial reactions to the staff, and other factors.  As such, a GM should likely prepare characters in advance, read their sheets, and then read the scenario, thinking about how the scenarios might play out.  It should be possible to run this on the fly, but a character who is familiar with the characters will have a much easier time.

The scenario itself has an impressive cast, a cult with well-thought-out motivations, a logical choice of Mythos antagonist, and enough non-Mythos activity to keep players guessing.  It would have been nice to see some of the material in the final confrontation customized for particular characters, to give it additional resonance.  Also, one notable absence from the scenario is a discussion of common war injuries and their treatments, an odd decision given the large number of characters who will be injured and need some sort of care.  Perhaps a WWI buff might be able to make some suggestions in that regard.

Nonetheless, Not So Quiet is another solid addition to the Trail of Cthulhu line.
