Faust’s Magia Naturalis et Innaturalis Available Free Online

I know that getting free books is a novelty for some of you, and that getting free books legally is a novelty for others.  I made a small discovery a few months ago that I’d like to share with you.

The Bavarian State Library has placed, among other items of interest to occult scholars and practitioners, the full text of what Butler referred to as the Faustian ur-text – Faust’s Magia naturalis et innaturalis.   Finding it is a little tricky – you’ll have to run a search for the title in their online catalog.  After that, just do this:

1.  Click “display volumes.”

2.  There are five sections of the book.  Click on one.

3.  On the left, click “Read online”.

4.  Click the link in the little box that pops up.

5.  In the small grey box on the left, click “PDF-Download”

6.  Click under the small UK flag under “PDF-Download” in the center of the page.

7.  Agree to the terms.

8.  Click on the download link.

9.  Repeat for the other four sections.
This is really great if you can read German.  If you can’t, you can still look at the pictures, which are pretty spectacular in some cases.

If you have any trouble, or if this gives you any insights, just post in the comments.

  1. I ve had the volumes for some time and it never occurred to me to post this. Thank you Dan. Somehow I feel like a scumbag😀

  2. Unfortunately the Bavarian scan is very poorly done and incomplete. There is a far better and complete scan at the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek website. Here is the link to the five volumes.

The quality of these scans is what Google Books wishes they could be. Unfortunately there is no PDF you’ll have to save each page. Since the scans include a lot more information than you’ll want and you may want to tweak the pages in a suitable paint program. It will take a little time.
